Since moving into our new home on Santa Fe Trail Ranch in December 2008, we have naturally seen many wild animals. I'd like to share two incidences involving bears and mountain lions. We were driving from our home at about 6:30pm in May 2009. Less than a quarter mile from home we saw two reddish blurs streak in opposite directions in front of our slow moving car. Turns out it was TWO mountains lions. Certainly made us aware of their close proximity! About two weeks ago we were preparing to leave for Denver for a wedding. We were gone for 4 days and upon our return we saw our empty platform feeder torn from the deck railing, an empty wire bird feeder suspended from a shephards hook attached to our high deck destroyed, a hummingbird feeder that had 1 inch of nectar left on the ground, and a swallows nest box ripped from the trunk of a pine tree. Didn't take any detective work to know we'd had a bear visit. The muddy pawprints all over the deck and railing confirmed that! Totally my fault for leaving them out even though they were empty or nearly so. Two days later Mama bear and one cub paid us another visit in the early evening as we sat on our deck. They ran for the hills upon seeing us. Four days later, also early evening, they revisited and got several blasts from an airhorn which sent them up trees and finally away. It's been about a week and a half with no more visits but we have come out of this much wiser than we thought we were. Even if feeders are empty it can be enough to cause some bears to investigate closer than is comfortable. The bears have taught these humans to be smarter in bear country!

Dave,

Thanks very much for sharing this info. This is great news...I totally missed this recent ruling by the State. There are some restrictions, but it looks like many people will now be able to collect their rain water in Colorado. I will do a new post soon with this new information. Again I do appreciate your comment and for sharing this info! Charlie

Actually Colorado just passed a new law that it is now legal to collect rainwater in many instances. I think the law just went into effect on July 1. Here is a link to a New York Times story on it: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/29/us/29rain.html?_r=1&ref=todayspaper. You will need to check with the state to find out what the actual restrictions are.

Never knew you were from Florida. Do you understand now why I am like I am? Can you see why we are doing everything in our power to get to Colorado? It's almost here for us. Do you think we will sell F-41 this season? Heh! how about some new pictures? Can't wait for it to happen. k

Raymond,

Good question. I am sure that this can be a concern especially if its smaller acreage and easily seen. The problem that I have seen is that if corner pins are not given some attention they tend to be hard to find. The brush and trees will make them hard to find and in some cases it will take a survey to locate them. So having them marked where they are easy to find is not a bad thing. And I never thought about a corner pin this way "Those corner pins are not his property to paint are they? " but I would think that the corner pins are jointly owned by all property owners that the pin marks their respective corners. Usually this is not an issue except in a case where it might be an eyesore such as this. You might get in touch with your neighbor and ask him if you could agree to continue to make these visible but maybe a different way. You want to preserve them and make sure they visible and that they are not moved also. Let me know what you figure out.
