In Colorado you can not collect rain water…

Did you know that you are not allowed to collect your rain water in Colorado? It’s true. During these times when water is so precious especially out west where it is so arid and typically we don’t get that much rain fall you would think that an excellent way to supplement your water would be by collecting your rain water. But in Colorado if you collect your rain water it could get you in trouble with the law.

I recently noticed an article in Popular Mechanics that I thought you might also find interesting. Check out their article titled “Who owns the Rain?” and also be sure to read our article about Colorado Water Facts that explains why in Colorado you need at least 35 acres in order to apply for a Domestic Water Well permit.

What do you think about your rights associated with collecting rain water?

Actually Colorado just passed a new law that it is now legal to collect rainwater in many instances. I think the law just went into effect on July 1. Here is a link to a New York Times story on it: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/29/us/29rain.html?_r=1&ref=todayspaper. You will need to check with the state to find out what the actual restrictions are.

    • Dave,

Thanks very much for sharing this info. This is great news…I totally missed this recent ruling by the State. There are some restrictions, but it looks like many people will now be able to collect their rain water in Colorado. I will do a new post soon with this new information. Again I do appreciate your comment and for sharing this info! Charlie
