Many of the original families that settled Southern Colorado came from the Spanish settlements south of Colorado in what we now call New Mexico. And a lot of them settled along the fertile area along Purgatorie River west of Trinidad. Not only can you see right down the valley west to see the snowcapped Sangre de Cristo mountains you can turn around and look back to the east and see Fisher’s Peak and Raton Mesa. And looking to the South just across Highway 12 you can see the Purgatorie River and Valley.
